Hal was a wonderful colleague whose intellectual leadership helped UC San Diego Economics rise to international prominence. His cheerfulness and intellectual curiosity invigorated the entire department. He advised and mentored many students over the years and was always generous with his time.   1. I was a student from 1978-82, and a co-president of the Economics & Management Science Student’s Assn. in 1982. Back then, we always thought he was the epitome of cool. I remember going to an event we sponsored, and he introduced himself as “an unemployed musician”. What brilliant Econometrician does that?

I wasn’t a graduate student or a colleague of Hal’s but, as a staff member in the Department of Economics, I was fortunate enough to have worked to make plan Hal’s festschrift last year and, unfortunately, his memorial service this year. Hal was always kind, gracious and smiling and he always said good morning as he walked past the staff offices on his way into work. I’m thankful to have known him the little bit that I did and am happy that I was able to make both his festschrift and memorial service special.
